🌙 How to Read Your Birth Chart by Hand
Most people let a website do all the work, but if you want to understand your birth chart, here’s the old-school way.
Step 1: Gather Your Information
You need:
📅 Date of birth
⏰ Exact birth time
📍 Birth location
The birth time is important because it determines your Rising Sign and house placements.
Step 2: Draw a Circle
Draw a large circle and divide it into 12 slices like a pie.
These are the 12 houses of astrology.
Each house rules a different part of life:
1️⃣ Self
2️⃣ Money
3️⃣ Communication
4️⃣ Home
5️⃣ Creativity
6️⃣ Health
7️⃣ Relationships
8️⃣ Death, transformation, inheritance
9️⃣ Travel, spirituality
🔟 Career
1️⃣1️⃣ Friends and community
1️⃣2️⃣ Secrets, dreams, ancestors
Step 3: Find Your Rising Sign
Your Rising Sign (Ascendant) always goes on the left side of the chart at the 9 o’clock position.
This determines where all the other zodiac signs fall.
For example:
If you’re Aries Rising:
House 1 = Aries
House 2 = Taurus
House 3 = Gemini
and so on.
Step 4: Place the Zodiac Signs
Write the zodiac signs around the wheel.

♊ Gemini
♋ Cancer
♌ Leo
♍ Virgo
♎ Libra
♏ Scorpio
♐ Sagittarius
♑ Capricorn
♒ Aquarius
♓ Pisces
Step 5: Find Where the Planets Were
Look up an ephemeris (planet position book or website).
Find where each planet was when you were born.
Examples:
☉ Sun in Aries
☽ Moon in Cancer
☿ Mercury in Pisces
♀ Venus in Taurus
♂ Mars in Leo
Write each symbol into the correct zodiac sign on your chart.
Step 6: Determine the House
Ask:
“What house is that sign located in?”
Example:
If Cancer is in your 4th House and your Moon is in Cancer…
You have:
🌙 Moon in Cancer in the 4th House
Meaning emotions are strongly tied to home, family, and ancestry.
Step 7: Look for the Big Three
Start here:
☉ Sun Sign = Core personality
☽ Moon Sign = Emotions
⬆ Rising Sign = How others see you
These three alone explain a huge part of your chart.
Step 8: Look for Stelliums
A stellium is 3 or more planets in the same sign or house.
Example:
☉ Sun
☿ Mercury
♀ Venus
All in Aries
This means Aries energy dominates the chart.
Step 9: Check the 8th and 12th Houses
These are the houses Porch Sitters always ask about.
🕯️ 8th House:
Death, inheritances, mysteries, transformation, spiritual rebirth.
🌙 12th House:
Dreams, ancestors, hidden enemies, psychic gifts, karmic lessons, things behind the veil.
Step 10: Find Your North Node
The North Node shows where your soul is trying to grow in this lifetime.
The South Node shows what comes naturally from the past.
Many astrologers believe these point toward past-life themes and soul lessons.
